Tanya Khanna began her lifelong obsession with architectural discourse in 2004 at Architecture+Design (a+d), India’s oldest and most renowned architecture and design journal. Subsequently, post her Master’s degree from University College London, she worked briefly for Allies and Morrison (London), and then for Sidell Gibson (London), where Ron Sidell encouraged her to pursue her instinctive, insightful assessment of design content. Returning to India in 2008, as Head- Communications, she helped establish one of India's leading architectural firms on the world stage, successfully developing and implementing a long-term communications strategy. As an independent researcher, Tanya has been involved with the Urban Age Department at the London School of Economics.
Since then, she has helped countless architectural and design firms (both in India & the United Kingdom) in curating their content and encapsulating their communications vision through publications, exhibitions, books, lectures and awards, primarily through a larger outreach strategy. Indian architects, designers and design practices traditionally steered away from communication and marketing activities, persisting instead in modest & reclusive brilliance. Tanya has sought to change this, putting India’s architectural talent on the global map, creating worldwide opportunities for deserving practices, by equipping them with competitive tools. She has been a strong influence in the field of design education in India as well. Tanya was instrumental in conceptualising the academic agenda for the Sushant School of Art & Architecture, spearheading the management initiative that helped secure University status for the school. In recent years, she facilitated the setting up of TDV The Design Village, an emerging school of design, where she has also lectured and formulated the curriculum for Communications. Additionally, she has taught at the School of Planning & Architecture and The Sushant School, where she spearheaded the management consultancy driven towards its current university status. In her role as a GRIHA certified Evaluator, she exhibits a strong commitment towards recognising sustainable design expertise, has been part of various academic/professional design juries and key industry events.
She has written extensively for Indian & International media, with academic insight and communicative breadth alike. She has also co-authored, and editorially directed a wide range of architectural books and monographs, and has been the Editor for the Fensterbau Frontale India Tabloid, focused on Facade and Fenestration Design in India, since 2014. Most recently, she has been advocating #talkingarchitecture, part of a lifelong investigation that she continues to explore. Tanya comes from within the design industry and brings with her an intrinsic understanding of what businesses need to succeed, and her holistic advice continues to help design brands, studios and large practices alike. Through her role at Epistle, she has laid the foundation of what is a one-of-its-kind agency in India, facilitating good design and bringing it forth on a global platform.
